Tips on creating your backyard retreat

From grills to gardens and pillows to patios, a growing number of people are enhancing their outdoor living space and turning the backyard into an outdoor room designed for relaxing and entertaining.

Before you start creating your backyard retreat, take a moment to survey your living space and envision your ideal environment. Visualizing the look, feel and function of the perfect outdoor oasis will help when choosing the items that can make your dream a reality. You also may want to schedule a stop at an all-in-one store, such as The Home Depot, for the necessary tools, supplies and outdoor accessories.

Entertaining while grilling and preparing the night's meal is a great way to include guests in the cooking festivities. A Franklin Chef Outdoor Refrigerator and a Charmglow Stainless Steel Grill can make cooking and eating outside a treat for you and your guests.

You can help make guests comfortable with fresh new dйcor items. From functional patio furniture to colorful pillows and outdoor rugs, experts say decorating outdoors has never been easier.

Consider adding several outdoor throw pillows in colorful designs. For example, The Home Depot offers 16-inch Plantation Pattern pillows in 20 colors. Or try patterned Panache Outdoor Rugs available in multiple sizes and colors. Hampton Bay patio furniture is also available exclusively at the same store, including matching swings, bars, beverage carts, chaise lounges and fire pits.

When the sun goes down, remember to keep the backyard amply lit with wall and post lights as well as outdoor lamps to give the area an indoor feel. Creative outdoor lighting, such as the Hampton Bay Solar-Powered Patio Umbrella available at The Home Depot, will dazzle friends and family and light up the night for extended evening gatherings.

You can keep the temperature regulated even outdoors with a Hampton Bay Outdoor Ceiling fan for humid days or Weber Flame Outdoor Gas Fireplace for cool nights. Colorful plants are another easy way to brighten your backyard retreat. Try bright orange Viva! SunPatiens to punch up color along the edge of your deck or patio.

Enjoy the warmer weather throughout the season by creating a backyard retreat that fits your style and entertaining needs. With so many design options and outdoor accessories to choose from, you'll be glad to relax in your comfortable oasis all summer long.

Roof preparation before installing roof shingles

Installing roof shingles can be an arduous task and should not be attempted if you don’t know what you are doing. It is vital to ensure that you complete adequate roof preparation before installing roof shingles otherwise you are risking the integrity of your new roof. A poorly prepared roof can quickly lead to holes and cracks that will in turn to lead to a leaking roof. Obviously the first part of your roof preparation before installing roof shingles is to rip off the hold or damaged shingles that you are replacing. While it is possible to leave these on if they are showing any signs of damage or wear you should replace them whenever possible.

Secure the roof boards

If you are using the same roof boards without replacing them you really should check each and every one to make sure none of them need replacing. Make sure they are all securely fastened down to prevent any damage to the lining or to the shingles. You also need to make sure there is no debris lying around because this too can cause damage to your new roof. Make sure no nails or other objects are protruding out of the roof.

Installing the drip edge.

Install the drip edge around the eave ends of the roof. Be sure to use galvanized nails so that they don’t rust in the rain. When adding the drip edge to the top of the roof install in the same way but this must drape over the rest of the drip edge to be effective. If you need to make any joints because the length of drip edge is not long enough to fit down the whole length of the eave then simple overlap the two pieces and bend the aluminum into place.

Ice and water shield.

You should consider putting down a layer of ice and water shield. Some states require that you use this and have set distances that the shield must be from the wall. It is very good stuff and incredibly adhesive so place it down where you want it to go before removing the backing paper. Once it’s stuck there is no way of removing it. Ice and water shield will cost you a fair amount at around $50 per square foot but the job it does is invaluable and a vital step when you are finishing your roof preparation before installing roof shingles. Cover any large knot holes with aluminum flashing or a similar material and hammer these down (you may want to use a hammer tacker or nail gun to make this step a little quicker and easier).

Adding the layer of felt.

Overlap your felt by a few inches and completely cover one side of the roof. To install a roof vent at this point you should cut a small part of the roof on either side of the peak virtually the whole length of the roof. Now cover the remaining side of the roof with felt and also cover over the roof vent hole you have created. This will be cut later. You have now finished the roof preparation before installing roof shingles and are ready to shingle your roof.

Summer every season

Ahhh, the sumptuous days of summer. Clear skies, green lawns, barbeques and trips to the beach. Who wouldn’t want to capture that feeling year-round?

Believe it or not, it is easy to bring the style of summer into your own home. Follow these simple, inexpensive tips, and be on your way to enjoying a summer home in your own home... any time of the year!

Color is Key

Paint is a simple tool that can be used to create a summery atmosphere in any room of your home. Brighten up a living room with lime green walls, a dining room with canary yellow, or a playroom with creamsicle orange.

Lighten up dark wood coffee tables, side tables or bookshelves with salmon pink or eggshell blue. Even painting the inside of a dark bookshelf a bright, summery color can freshen up a room considerably.

Store or cover darker colored items, such as maroon pillows and brown couches, replacing them or covering them with lighter, brighter covers. Floral patterns are nice and summery, as is a beach motif. Hang white or see-through curtains over dark drapes to quickly achieve a summery feel.

White is the perennial summery non-color. Repainting walls, bookshelves, coffee tables, and even framed mirrors a cool, crisp white will transform any room. With all that white, don’t be surprised if you and your family feel like you’ve been instantly transported to Miami Beach!

Fabric of Life

Store or cover wintry wares like velvet drapes and pillows, wool throws, and dark leather couches, ottomans and chairs. Don’t worry, you can always rotate them back out again when you are ready to return from your summer retreat!

Add summery fabrics, like linen table cloths, cotton flower-print curtains, and gauzy bed skirts.

Cover couches and armchairs with bright or floral patterned slipcovers... nothing says summer like light, bright fabrics.

Feel Like Flowers

Fresh Flowers will give your house a fresh summer look and scent. Keep water in vases clean by changing it often, and throw out flowers as soon as they begin to wilt, replacing them with a different bright selection.

Floral patterns also spell summer. Flowers look great embedded in the embroidery of a throw blanket, covering the upholstery of a couch or armchair, or gracing the surface of a decorative plate, bowl or hanging print.

Decorative floral accessories can be set atop bookshelves, entertainment centers, desks and dining room tables to "summer-ize" a room. Flowers, greenery or a small fountain can also be placed inside an unused fireplace for a more summery feel.

Odds and End Tables

Choose a theme that represents summer to you, then decorate a room around that theme. Beach and seaside items, flowers, fruits and birds are just a few themes that lend a summery feeling to any room.

Choose furniture for its summery feel, and dot these items around the house. Add a couple of wicker chairs, a wrought iron and glass coffee table, a white bookshelf or desk, or even a new floral couch (or an old couch with a new floral slipcover!), and transform any room in your house.

However you decide to add a touch of summer to your home, do so with happiness and joy... the energy of summer! Then, make yourself a lemonade, cuddle into your couch or loveseat, and bask in the warmth of your bright, summery home.

Trends in furniture

Remember when everyone was buying contemporary furniture or early American furniture? Or French provincial? These days there really isn’t a furniture trend. Instead, it’s all about buying the furniture YOU like that most suitably fits your lifestyle.

Today’s trend about furniture color is a simple one. If you like it, buy it. If you don’t, don’t buy it. The color scheme for furniture encompasses all tastes. You can find the softest pastels, the brightest blues, the most vibrant reds, and any other color you like in just about all kinds of furniture.

So, how do you make your home feel “trendy” in a day and age where there is no trend? It is simple: be yourself. If you have a brown leather sofa that you’ve had for a while but it’s still in good shape, buy a new orange corduroy recliner to throw into the mix. The color will give your old furniture a breath of fresh air.

Maybe you can dress up your current furniture with some trendy throw pillows. Make your furniture look extra special by purchasing (or making, if you happen to be creative with a needle and thread) throw pillows accented with beads, ribbon, or appliquйs to fit the theme of your room.

Do you have a room full of shabby chic furniture that you bought a few years ago but now you feel like it is outdated? Give it an update. Give it a light sanding and repaint with a brighter color or a darker one, depending on the rest of the dйcor in your room.

Another way to make your room seem trendy is to leave your furniture alone all together. Instead of trying to create a trendy room based on your furniture, choose to paint your room. What color is your room now? If the walls are white or beige, any color will be a welcome change. If you have had vivid walls for a while, maybe now is the time to go neutral. Any change will make your room – and its furniture – feel fresh and trendy!

If you don’t want to update your room by painting – or if you live in a rental that prohibits painting -- make your furniture seem trendier by hanging new pictures and putting new accessories on your old tables. If you’re tired of the “country” feel your furniture and room provokes, take down the country inspired art and replace it with something modern that uses the same colors already part of your furniture. Add a big colored glass vase to a table and drop a bouquet of silk flowers in it. Or, if that has been your look, replace it with a bud vase and a single, long stemmed poppy, rose or daisy. Sometimes you can make your furniture look new just by what you place near it!

Decide what look you like and create it. Don’t worry about what’s “in.” As long as it fits in your lifestyle and budget, these days it is considered “in.”

How exactly do septic tanks work

A sewerage drain field and a septic tank make up a small scale sewage treatment system. A septic tank is basically a rectangular shaped underground receptacle for wastewater. It is watertight, made of concrete, and consists of tanks that are divided into chambers. The first chamber has twice the volume as the second and the majority of the organic solid matter, referred to as sludge, gets settled here. The second chamber further purifies the wastewater.

The septic tank collects wastewater from toilets, showers, sinks, etc. Due to the absence of a current the sludge quickly settles down to the tank floor. Anaerobic bacterial digestive activity on the sludge leads to the generation of methane and carbon dioxide; the sludge is stabilized and does not rot anymore. Particles of stabilized sludge stay settled, some may float to the top as scum.

A septic tank should be constructed such that there is maximum contact time with the microorganisms so as to enable swifter digestion of the sludge. This is achieved by placing the inlet, overflow, and outlet diagonal to each other and by making the streams flow in vertically placed pipes.

The semi-purified water moves to the second chamber via the overflows that are constructed such that the upward motion of water prevents larger particles from flowing into the second chamber. The feeding, digestion, and settlement of organic matter continues in the second chamber. The retention time in the second chamber is half that of the first chamber because of its size and the fact that the amount of organic matter to treat is less. The outlet is constructed in the diagonal corner to the overflow.

The treated wastewater is directed to a drain field, also known as a seepage field, where any impurities that still exist get decomposed naturally, the water is taken up by the plant root system or it may even become a part of the groundwater. The large sized drainage field is required if the soil is not very porous. A septic system can be made to work entirely by using gravitational forces; at some places, however, a pump may be required to overcome topographical limitations.

The rate of sludge generation in septic tanks is around 0.05 cubic yards every year for an individual. Septic tanks need to be emptied every few years so that there is enough reaction space for the microorganisms to attack the wastewater and for the sludge to settle.

The septic tank may be emptied every 5-7 years depending upon the amount of wastewater it processes. The tank is emptied using an exhauster truck manned by trained personnel. The sludge that is sucked into the exhauster truck is released into public waste water treatment plants, sanitary landfills, or sludge drying beds.

Properly digested sludge can be used as a natural fertilizer; this is possible only if no fresh wastewater is added to the tank for at least one week.

The design of the septic tank should be such that the wastewater always flows in its designated path and no short circuits in the water flow occur. T-pipe-connectors with inflow and outflow openings under the water level should be used for inlet, overflow, and outlet pipes. This prevents the floating scum from clogging the pipes. A grease trap should be provided for the wastewater inflow pipe.

Acquiring construction equipment

Many companies and contractors in need of acquiring new or used construction equipment often don't have the financial resources needed to buy the construction equipment outright, unless it is a large corporation or some branch of the government. This is when the option of renting or leasing construction equipment comes into play. Deciding to rent or lease often depends on what the contractor or business manager feels most comfortable doing from a financial perspective after evaluating the many possibilities and deciding what suits their need from long term leasing to short term renting. The side of construction equipment rentals has met a positive growth since 2004, where nearly 50% of construction equipment dealers' are offering heavy equipment rentals as part of their operation.

There are two ways most companies acquire their construction equipment, renting or leasing. Many contractors or business managers viewed renting or leasing as an opportunity to test out construction equipment at no extra cost and with no strings attached with the possibility of buying. Most often the rental would be converted into a purchase to avoid losing the invested equity. Most buyers would also take into account whether their business is flourishing or floundering, before committing to buying any construction equipment. In a case where a business has an uncertain future, the potential buyers may deem renting as the best way economically and then return the construction equipment to its owner when the job is done.

The Association of Equipment Manufacturers (AEM) is the international trade and business development resource for companies that manufacture equipment, products and services used worldwide in the construction, agricultural, mining, forestry, and utility fields. The AEM has conducted a survey that predicted that in the near future, more construction equipment buyers will turn to the Internet for product purchases; as construction equipment buyers increasingly turn to the Internet for transactions, information and support.

Consequently, the rise of on-line auctions, sales, renting and leasing are made available by a variety of merchants who cater to the needs of companies and contractors worldwide. On-line merchants such as: Machine Mart, Rock & Dirt, Machinery Trader, Iron Planet, Contractors Hotline, etc. are only a few of the leading markets where companies and contractors alike can find nearly every piece of construction equipment they are looking for, from the top manufacturers such as Caterpillar and John Deere to many more. Many of these merchants offer the options of buying, selling, renting and leasing of new and used construction equipment to parts service and repair and machine maintenance. It's always wise to investigate the background of any merchant before you place a bid or purchase any construction equipment, to ensure a good reputable stand point before entering into a contract with any dealer or merchant. It's always wise to shop around and compare deals on construction equipment to other offers before committing to any deal.

Air conditioners for greater energy efficiency

Are you aware of the fact that around one sixth of the total electricity produced in the United States goes in air conditioning buildings? The U. S. Department of Energy has therefore increased the minimum energy efficiency rating for air conditioners on 23rd January 2006. The increased energy efficiency ratings would be useful for all, as it would help in reducing the energy bills as well as pollution.

Do you know how efficient your air conditioner is? One way you can easily find it out is through SEER, i. e., an energy efficiency ratio measurement. The SEER, or seasonal energy efficiency ratio, is used for setting a basic standard of machines that are friendly to the environment. It rates an air conditioner on the basis of the amount of energy it can effectively use. If the number of SEER given on the conditioner is high, it goes to say that the energy efficiency of the machine is also high.

Since the concerns about the environment have increased, the amount of the SEER on air conditioning machines has also gone up. Whereas in 1992, the minimum SEER standard was 10, the new law passed in January 2006 has made all rumors true by stretching up the minimum SEER to 13. This rise in the SEER from 10 to 13 means that the efficiency of a particular air conditioner has improved 30 percent more.

However, a machine with a higher SEER would mean that its price and the installation costs would also mount up. But this does not really seem to affect most people as they presume that a higher initial investment would ultimately be cost effective in the long run, and they would be able to save on their energy bills this way.

If you are impressed by the fact that one sixth of the United States’ electricity goes in air conditioning, you would be all the more pleased to know that The Department of Energy assumes that by 2030, the energy and SEER laws will be further changed. The energy that they would thus save would actually provide enough electricity for 26 million homes for an entire year!

So the best way you can save energy is to bring home a good quality air conditioner. The most vital thing is to regularly maintain the cooling unit of your machine. You can ensure a maximum efficiency of your conditioner if you change the filters and verify the functioning of the machine from time to time. If it’s not already too late for this advice, get a qualified technician to install your air conditioner.

Memory foam mattress - get a good night s sleep

Memory Foam Mattresses are being used all over the world, not only for their comfort but also for all the health benefits they provide. The first memory foam was developed for NASA around the 70's for their space program, though it was never used. Memory foam is pressure sensitive, or temperature sensitive polyurethane foam which has the ability to compress, but then gradually return to its original shape. Therefore memory foam does not place nearly the same resistance on the joints as springs, air, and other materials that bounce back more rapidly. This invention has created a real hit among young and old alike. The Memory Foam Mattress has become the fastest growing segment in the mattress industry.

Memory Foam Mattresses have the ability to spread pressure over a greater surface area. These mattresses are now prescribed by doctors as well, for people having difficulty sleeping and other health problems like backache, as they can help to reduce pressure points.

There are many different companies now that make these mattresses, though not all memory foams are created equal. So don't try to compromise on the price; instead of getting those really inexpensive ones and regretting later, it's better to pay a little more and be assured of the quality you are getting. The cheap memory foam mattresses are generally made of either low density memory foam or layered with other cheaper foam products. They may not give the same comfort as higher density mattresses and will wear out relatively fast.

Memory Foam Mattresses come in different types. 4 lb density ones are the most popular as they are very high quality products and can last for a good amount of time - about 3 - 5 years. 3 - 3.5 lb density memory foam mattresses are cheaper than the 4 lb ones. If you are willing to pay more, you can also get 5.3 lb density, which are of very high quality. This density mattress is heavier, more temperature sensitive, usually stiffer, and bounces back more slowly. No matter which one you buy, you need to be careful about what foam it has in it. See that the cheap fillers are not used for your mattress. You should thoroughly research the company you are planning to get your Memory Foam Mattress from.

You should also check about the durability. Some may feel great in the beginning but may break down quickly. You should try and be safe by sticking to formulations that have been time tested, and not blindly rely on any new formulations.

A good Memory Foam Mattress is something you can invest in and you will definitely not regret it. You have to use it to believe it. So drive away those sleepless and uncomfortable nights, and get yourself one today!

Some do-it-yourself tips for your air conditioner maintenance

Who in this world wouldn’t want his/her material assets to last long? Of course we all do. And if your air conditioner goes faulty, you may have to incur a high cost for its repair. So it’s always better to maintain it to help it last longer. That way, you will be able to save up a lot of your finances throughout life.

To help you keep your air conditioner running smooth and trouble-free, here are some tips which you may follow:

1. Keep an eye on the hoses to check if there are any leaks on them. Do this at least twice a year—once before you start using it for the summer months and another when you stop using it with the coming of winter. These are the best times to check leaks and in case you spot any, you can repair it right away before it gets worse.

2. Keep the compressor always clean. It is the most valuable part of the air conditioning unit and costs a lot to replace. And of course, it catches dirt in all the pollution around. So a little bit of spray cleaning of the compressor can ensure a longer life for it.

3. Every two years, call a professional to clean the ductworks for your air conditioner. This is not anything great or hard, nor a must. But keeping them clean assures better life for the whole machine.

4. The compressor should be kept covered when not in use, especially in the winter season. It must always be well-protected from harsh snows or sleet or rains. Some companies have their own compressor covers for the unit. So ask for one when you are buying your air conditioner. These covers are easy-to-fit and hassle-free. But if you don’t get such covers, manage on your own. But protect the compressor always.

These simple do-it-yourself maintenance steps should ideally be followed by every owner of an air conditioner if he/she wants the machine to last longer and better.
